The Quantum Computing Leap: Translating Abstract Science into Universal Access - Caiseal Beardow (PhD)

Quantum computing is locked away in labs, but creative technologist Caiseal Beardow shows how this will change. She demystifies the technology by drawing parallels with digital computers. The key to moving quantum computing from abstract theory to universal, hands-on application. Language: English

Time & Location

Vice Versa bar, Ceintuurbaan 206, 1072 GC Amsterdam, Netherlands

About the talk

The term 'quantum computing' is often a stand-in for 'unsolvable mystery.' But what if the biggest barrier to this revolution isn't the fundamental physics, but the way we conceptualize and interact with the technology?

Creative technologist Caiseal Beardow will challenge common perceptions of quantum computing. She begins with a brief primer on its nature, history, and applications, explaining how this technology developed its formidable reputation. Crucially, Caiseal will draw illuminating parallels with the evolution of digital computers, exploring their journey from specialized lab devices - much like today’s quantum computers - to a ubiquitous and indispensable resource.

She will demonstrate the pivotal role of interaction design in this process, sharing her direct experiences of designing educational interfaces to make the science hands-on for newcomers. This talk challenges the notion that formal education is a prerequisite for meaningful engagement, proving that the future of quantum technology depends on collective understanding, conversation, and design from every sector of society.

About the speaker

Caiseal is a researcher and creative technologist actively exploring new paradigms for interaction with emerging technologies. She is driven by a core belief that science and technology are for everyone, and that formal education should not be a prerequisite for meaningful engagement.

She recently concluded her PhD in the Design Aesthetics section of Human-Centered Design at TU Delft's IDE Faculty, specializing in making quantum computing approachable. Her research focuses on emerging Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) practices for quantum computing, including the development of interface metaphors for programming quantum algorithms. Her work was part of the NWO project Quantum Inspire (with collaborators including QuTech, TNO and Zurich Instruments).

Caiseal also actively works to broaden access and inclusion in the sector as an Organising Committee Member of We In Quantum Development (WIQD), a Dutch organisation that advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion in quantum technologies.

The bar is open from 17:00 – Arrive early, grab a seat, and settle in.

Talk starts at 19:30 and runs until around 21:00.

Stick around afterward —good conversations don’t have closing times.
